Computer step by step
 Make your Pc better
Back
The pc tune-up procedure is intended to increase your system's performance.
All presented methods are easy to follow and prevent your system to run slow,
freeze or crash. You will use your default windows features without needing any
third party applications. We will not include steps that can drastically modify your
system's functionality. A good example to explain better what we mean by drastic
modifications is the following. For example to improve your system performance you can
stop services you usually don't use. One service that can be stopped is the one controlling
your printer. This action might be good for a computer user which doesn't use  a printer, but it generates
errors  for another which uses one.
To increase the overall time of pc tune up you can choose between the command line method and normal
method. We believe the method using command prompt is faster then the normal one, because you can just
select the whole command line, right click on the selected area, click Copy, then right click on your command
prompt window and choose Paste in order to copy it. However, we recommend to choose the one you feel
most comfortable with. Also for backup reasons we added for every method detailed articles with pictures,
you can access them by clicking on the operating system logo.

Note: In order to achieve best results, you need to complete all steps.
Lets start applying the steps by opening a command prompt window :

In order to open a Command Prompt window please go to Pearl button (Start) and click on the

   Hibernation

We can free more space by disabling the hibernation feature, this only if you don't use it.
There are 2 features that are present when you restart or shutdown your computer: standby and
hibernate. The concept of standby means the computer is in a “sleep” mode and is always ready to wake
up. All your work and running applications will be resumed. The standby feature save all data in RAM. Some
peripherals will have the power cut off, the computer enters in a power saving mode.
The concept of the hibernation is also to resume all your work and running applications but it save all
these information in a file called hiberfil.sys which is located on your system drive. The size of the file can
reach 2 GB or more. The main benefit of disabling hibernation is freeing up hard drive space.
Lets start now by following these steps:
   Using CMD
In the Command Prompt window please select, copy and paste the following command:

REG add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" /v "PagingFiles" /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "C:\pagefile.sys 0 0" /f

   Power options

A power plan is a collection of hardware and system settings that manages how your computer uses
power. In order for your computer to run at it's maximum speed and potential we recommend to set Power
Options to High performance.
Change this setting following these steps:
   Check your system files integrity

Also integrated in your operating system is the System File Checker Tool. It's a very useful and powerful
tool to restore corruptions in your windows system's files. Why do we need to use it? During every day use
we install several programs which need access to system files; they may need to modify them or even
overwrite them. This tool was created like a security measure to protect critical system files. Every change is
tracked by the system and a spare copy of the initial file is saved. Like this, your system protects him self from
malicious attacks, corruptions or several other problems.
The tool is very easy to use, you just need to start the checking process. If any critical files are damaged
they will be restored automatically.
Check your system files integrity following these steps:
   Using CMD
In the Command Prompt window please select, copy and paste the following command:

sfc /scannow

Please press Enter to execute

Note: This command, depending of your operating system, will ask for windows installation cd
Once you have completed all the steps from PC Tune-up article, your computer speed should already be
improved. In order to successfully complete the procedure, you will need to restart your computer. The first
restart will be slow and will take longer then usual, because the disk check utility was also scheduled to run.
Be patient and leave it to run. The full optimization will be done and you'll notice the improvements only after
a second restart.

Note: If you notice anything you don't like after you have finished the PC Tune-up, you can use System
restore to return to a previous state. You can use the System restore point created when you have begun
the PC tune-up.

However, if you have problems with your computer, feel free to ask for help on our Forum or send us an
email at admin@computerstepbystep.com
   Virtual memory

Virtual memory or page file is a substitute for RAM. The difference between virtual memory and RAM is that
virtual memory is using the hard disk like RAM. Page file uses a file pagefile.sys which is located on your
system drive. Virtual memory comes in handy when you are running low on RAM. The default virtual memory,
paging file should be set to system managed. The system will know how much space should be allocated for
the system and running programs to function properly.
Please determine available space following these steps:

   Clean your temporary files

Temporary files are  created by many different programs. They use the temporary folder during the
installation process  and while they are running. These files supposed to be removed once the process is
completed, but due to various reasons: unexpected shutdown, programming errors, corrupt installation, etc,
they are left behind, wasting free space of your hard disk.
The temporary folder is also the perfect hiding place for malicious files like viruses and spyware. From here
they can spread  infecting the whole computer.
A periodical clean up of your temporary files will certainly improve your system performance.

   Delete old windows update files

Windows update is a Microsoft feature with the purpose to keep your system up to date by offering you
several patches, security updates, service packs and also new enhancements. This service scans your system
and provides you the possibility to choose which updates to install. There is no need to worry, all offered
updates are compatible with your system and all you need to do is to choose and start the installation
process. Once the process is started it will perform the required steps in the background and you can go on
using your computer without any interference. Some installed updates will require a system restart, if this is
the case you will be prompted to restart your computer or you can postpone it.
During update process, windows updates are first downloaded and then saved on your computer. When
the process is completed these files remain on your computer reducing disk space. They can be deleted to
gain more free space.
Delete your old windows update files following these steps:
   Using CMD
In the Command Prompt window please select, copy and paste the following commands:

   Run a disk error checkup

Your hard disk might have errors or corruption in the file or directory structure. They can be produced by
several causes: system freezes, inappropriate shut downs or power outages. The check disk command will
inspect your hard drive volumes and repair problems related to bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files,
and directory errors. It will repair automatically any found errors. Mainly we recommend to run a check disk
for your system partition. Because the partition is in use, this check will be done next time when the
computer restarts. The process takes a while but it makes sure your disk is healthy.
A regular disk checkup is part of a good system maintenance.
Check your system files integrity following these steps:
   Using CMD
In the Command Prompt window please select, copy and paste the following commands:

chkdsk /x /f /r

   Defragment your disk drive volumes

Another useful tool is Disk Defragmenter Utility. All files that are stored on your hard disk are physically
organized in contiguous or in smaller fragments. Accessing fragmented files is slower then accessing content
from a contiguous region. By defragmenting the disk, we reduce the time to read and write data. Another
advantage is that it will speed up your system startup time.
A regular defragmention will maintain your disk performance.
Check your system files integrity following these steps:
   Using CMD
In the Command Prompt window please select, copy and paste the following command:

   Determine available space

Next step is to check free available space on your system partition. A good amount of free space needs to
be reserved and kept only for your system to work properly. Making sure enough space is available we avoid
system freezes, crashes or situations when the system is not able boot at all.
Please determine available space following these steps:
   Using Windows
Please go to Start and open Computer

Right click on your system partition and select Properties

We need the Task Manager application to check system's performance before and after the PC Tune-Up
process.
Task Manager is a operating system program which provides detail information about running process and
programs. Mainly you should focus on the CPU and Memory usage.
At the end of the PC Tune-Up process the usage should be less then before.
Please follow this steps in order to open Task Manager window:
   Using CMD
In the Command Prompt window please select, copy and paste the following command:

As we have spoke previously in the Software maintenance article, you may find that your system has only
the minimum amount of RAM. If this is the case  you may need additional RAM installed.
For instance, if Windows Vista Home Basic system requirements is 512 MB Ram and your  hardware
settings show 512 MB, then you have to understand that this amount of RAM is necessary only for your
operating system. Additional Ram needs to be added in order for your installed programs to function as they
Should.
We do this hardware check to eliminate the hardware part and concentrate more on the software settings
to improve your system performance.
Please follow this steps in order to open System properties window:
   Using CMD
   System properties

We will use the System Properties window to check your hardware settings,  if it meets the system
requirements defined for your operating system. We are interested here to check hardware information, like
the reported amount of available Ram.
The General tab from System Properties window will show:
- your operating system edition
- your processor type and speed
- how much RAM is available for your computer
Use this link to verify if your computer meets the minimum requirements for basic functionality.
Note: Keep in mind that this requirements are only for a good functionality of your operating system and not
for your additional installed programs.

   Clean/Reset your browser

A browser is a software application which helps you to load the websites you love so much. There are a
variety of browsers available for navigating the world wide web (www). Most popular ones are Internet
Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Netscape and Safari. In time your browser performance decreases
due to several reasons: add-ons, toolbars, plug-ins, etc.
Toolbars, how did they arrive on your computer?
Now a days almost each software comes with a toolbar which is mentioned during installation process and
it's added to your browser. One toolbar is not a lot, but in time by installing more applications you will find
your self with at least 5 or 6 toolbars.  A massive amount of toolbars will decrease your screen view and
browsing performance.
Each browser has a cache folder where it stores copies of accessed web content. The purpose of this
folder is to increase your network performance. When you access a web page which has been accessed
before it will be loaded it from cache. This technique has a downside, the cache content increases filling your
hard drive with unwanted files. This means less space for your system.
Toolbars, add-ons and stored internet files lead to poor navigation experience. A quick resolution is to
reset your browser back to default settings. This procedure removes all customizations done to the browser:
removes your homepage settings, disables all add-ons and toolbars, erases your browsing history, deletes
all saved accounts and passwords and changes your security settings to default mode. Basically after this
step, you start with a fresh copy of your browser.
Note: Bookmarks or favorites will not be affected by this  procedure.
